Rocky Top Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
August always brings a particular energy to Mapleton that I genuinely look forward to as a surgeon. The orchards along the hillside start giving way to that golden late-summer light, and families are simultaneously squeezing in last-minute adventures and racing to get everyone ready for the school year ahead. It’s a season of transition, and that rhythm shows up clearly in the oral health needs we see at Rocky Top Oral Surgery.
This past August, we had the privilege of serving twenty-six patients from the Mapleton area — a meaningful reminder of just how much this community trusts us with their care. Of all the procedures we performed for our Mapleton neighbors this month, wisdom tooth extractions were by far the most common, accounting for sixteen of the cases. That comes as no surprise at this time of year. Back-to-school season creates a natural urgency for families to address wisdom teeth that have been quietly causing discomfort. High school seniors heading off to college and college students returning for fall semester don’t want to deal with an impacted molar flare-up in the middle of finals week, and parents understandably want to take care of things while their young adults are still home and recovery can happen in a comfortable, familiar environment. We see this pattern every August, and I’m always glad we can be a resource for the Mapleton community during that window.
Beyond wisdom teeth, we completed ten dental implant placements this month. Implants represent one of the most life-changing procedures we offer — restoring not just the appearance of a smile but the function and confidence that go along with it. The demand we’re seeing for implants reflects a broader awareness in communities like Mapleton that tooth replacement doesn’t have to mean compromising. Modern implant technology has made this a reliable, long-term solution, and it’s deeply rewarding to be part of that process for so many of our neighbors. We also performed eight surgical extractions this month, which often involve teeth that are broken down, impacted, or positioned in a way that requires specialized surgical technique beyond what a general dentist can offer in their office.
From a seasonal standpoint, August is genuinely one of our busiest months, and for good reason. Summer schedules — while hectic — offer a flexibility that disappears once school bells ring and sports seasons kick into full gear. Whether it’s a student athlete who needs to heal before soccer season or a parent who’s finally found time between summer commitments to address something they’ve been putting off, the timing is meaningful. I always encourage families in the Mapleton area to think of these late-summer weeks as a valuable window for oral surgical care that might otherwise get pushed to the back burner.
Oral health is deeply connected to overall wellbeing, and staying ahead of surgical needs — rather than waiting until pain forces the issue — leads to better outcomes and smoother recoveries. My team and I are committed to making that process as comfortable and straightforward as possible for every person who walks through our doors.
