August always has a particular energy here in Springville that I genuinely look forward to. There’s that distinctive mix of late-summer heat, back-to-school excitement, and the quiet hum of families wrapping up vacations before the school year kicks into gear. After more than a decade of serving this community, I’ve come to think of August as one of our most meaningful months at Rocky Top Oral Surgery — not just because we’re busy, but because the work we do this time of year tends to set people up for healthier seasons ahead.

This past August, we had the privilege of caring for 48 patients from the Springville area, and the procedure mix told a story that felt very true to the season. Wisdom tooth extractions led the way, accounting for 51 procedures across the month. That number never surprises me in August. Every summer, we see a wave of high school graduates and college students — home for the break, finally with time to address the wisdom teeth that have been quietly causing problems for months or even years. Back-to-school season creates a genuine window of opportunity, and Springville families are smart about taking advantage of it. Getting those third molars out before a student heads off to a university schedule, when recovery time is flexible and mom or dad are nearby, simply makes good sense.

Beyond wisdom teeth, our team completed 17 surgical extractions this month, addressing teeth that had become compromised beyond what routine dentistry could resolve. These procedures remind me why a close partnership between oral surgeons and general dentists matters so much in a community like ours — catching problems early and referring at the right time makes recovery smoother and outcomes better for everyone involved. We also placed 8 dental implants this August, which continues a steady and encouraging trend. Implants represent one of the most meaningful investments a person can make in their long-term oral health, and it’s rewarding to see more Springville residents exploring that option. Rounding out the month, we performed one bone grafting procedure, an important foundation step that makes future implant success possible in cases where bone volume needs to be restored.

The seasonal insight I always share with colleagues this time of year is simple: August is a gift for proactive care. Students and working adults alike tend to have slightly more flexibility before the fall routine locks in. If a dentist has flagged a concern — impacted wisdom teeth, a failing tooth, a gap from an old extraction — August is often the ideal time to address it, rather than waiting until the holiday crunch or the middle of a busy semester. Our team at Rocky Top Oral Surgery is structured specifically to accommodate those moments, offering thoughtful surgical care with recovery support that helps patients get back to their lives as comfortably and quickly as possible.

I’m deeply grateful to be part of the Springville community and to play even a small role in keeping our neighbors healthy, confident, and pain-free. If your dentist has recommended an oral surgery consultation, or if you have questions about wisdom teeth, implants, or any other surgical dental concern, I’d love for you to reach out to us at Rocky Top Oral Surgery. We’re here, we’re local, and we’d be honored to take care of you.
